May 2008 Update

It's been a few months since I attended Sleuthfest, and I'm just now getting back to this.  Right now I'm in the midst of revising and editing all three of my mystery novels and hope to then finish up the St. Louis novel.  I suspect I will be renaming that one, but it will still be set in St. Louis.  I lopped off the first chapter of the Seattle story and removed two characters out of the first big scene in the San Francisco story, so I'm definitely doing more radical revision this time around.  The stories are piecing together better now.

I will be up at Murder in the Grove in Boise, ID the first weekend in June, which means I'll miss the first meeting of the Midwest chapter of MWA in St. Louis.  An unfortunate overlap since I would really like to meet some of the St. Louis mystery authors, but alas, everything had already been purchased by the time I found out.  So next time.

Back from the Dead

Okay, so I didn't keep up with this as I had thought.  The winter was a little busier than I had anticipated, but my schedule has eased up some now.  I am revising both A Fate Worse and Powers and Principalities (and the name may change) and hope to finish this novel, too.  My short story, Shame, was a finalist in the contest but did not take first prize, but I did enjoy the story that did win.  I had a great time at Sleuthfest, talked with Kelly Nichols (aka PJ Parrish) a bit, and met Lee Child.  I will be out in Boise, Idaho in June for Murder in the Grove wth J.A. Jance, after stopping off in Seattle to celebrate my sister's birthday, which happens to be the day before the conference.  Good timing!

Short Story Contest Update

I just received response back that my short story, Shame, is one of eight finalists in the contest I entered.  We will find out the winner at the end of February at Sleuthfest in Florida, but it's encouraging to simply be a finalist.  I felt good about this story and am glad to see that I have learned so much.  One small step at a time!

Contest

I sent off an entry for a short story into a contest last week.  This is for Sleuthfest 2008, which will be held in Florida in February.  I am currently working on stories for two more contests, one science fiction/fantasy, and the other mystery.  Both of these need to be sent in by the end of December.  So far, I've started three different stories for the science fiction/fantasy short, and I think I finally have the start of the one with which I will go.  Since I can enter multiple stories into this contest, perhaps I will finish off the others, but that will depend on time.  For the mystery contest, I may enter A Simple Prejudice since I am in the midst of revising that anyway.  I'll keep you posted.

Agent Response

I received a response about A Fate Worse from the agent in NYC on the 29th letting me know that although she felt I had a good style and a unique story, she did not feel enough connection with my main character to feel as if she could effectively represent my novel in the marketplace.  She encouraged me in the areas she felt were done well and suggested that I work on the dialogue more.  I had received this comment before, so I have decided to check with a friend here to see if she might be willing to read through it again and let me know how to make the characters and dialogue more authentic.  Many of the characters in this novel are African-American, and the main character is a single mother.  Since I am not any of this, and my friend is, I have turned to her for help here since I do like these characters, but I do not want them to sound silly or trite, either.  I'll keep you posted.

Agent Update

I checked in with an agent reviewing my novel, A Fate Worse.  I should be getting a response, one way or the other, the week of Halloween.  Even if this particular agent decides to not represent me, I suspect I will get some good feedback from her, which will help me to improve my novel for the next round of submissions.  Of course, if she is interested in representing me...

Search Engines

I just noticed for the first time today that my website appears at the top of the list when I put my name in the search engines so I guess the spiders have visited me.  Thankfully, all the pages of my site are functioning.  I suppose it's time for me to update this blog more frequently now and to update my pages from time to time.  I should be hearing from an agent sometime this month.  Check back to find out how that goes.

Kick-off

Welcome to the beginning of the blog!  Enjoy looking around the site and reading through the sample chapters of the novels I am writing.  Learn the writing and publishing process along with me, and let me know what you think.
